REVIEW: ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA

Ten years after the team of Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akthar, Zoya Akthar, Javed Akthar, Reema Kagti and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy created that enormously loveable DIL CHAHTA HAI, they come again in ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA with slightly different responsibilities. In the earlier movie, Ritesh was the co-producer, Javed the lyric writer and Shankar-Ehsan-Loy were the music directors, Farhan was the dialogue writer; they retain the same portfolios in the current movie. In the earlier movie, Farhan was the writer and director, Reema and Zoya were the assistant directors and in the current movie, Zoya and Reema share the credits for the story, and Zoya directs the movie. It should therefore come as no surprise that both the movies fall in the same genre and reflect the same sensitivity and focus on how male bonding helps all the protagonists to come to terms with their internal demons.
The casting and acting was top-notch in DIL CHAHTA HAI; here again, we have outstanding acting by all the three male protagonists: Farhan, Abhay Deol and Hritik Roshan. Their playful spats, inner conflicts and camaraderie has been filmed beautifully. Even Katrina and Kalki Koechlin, who contribute to the K factor (the romance and the drama part) do their jobs well, but I would attribute that to the fact that the scripts were written to suit their personalities. Naseeruddin Shah who makes a guest appearance for about two minutes is as usual extremely impactful.
And of course, if the 2001 effort had Goa locales, this has some exotic locales in Spain. Audiences who mistake this to be a promotion effort for Spain’s Tourism Bureau interspersed with a story line could be pardoned simply because at a quite a few points, Zoya gets a little lost in focusing on the visual beauty of the locales. That perhaps is the movie’s weakest part; a more seasoned director and editor would have trimmed those scenes to just the right length to convey and build the relevant mood.
Shankar-Ehsan-Loy’s music fails to click and is unlike their effort in Dil Chahta Hai. The only number which passes muster is the Senorita number and even that can be attributed to the stunning choreography. The movie has a lot of humour thrown in and thankfully of a class that is not crass; it will therefore not appeal to the front benchers.
Javed Akthar’s poetry which finds expressions in the form of Farhan’s writings in the movie are truly lyrical and worthy of being narrated DOBARA. If only, Zoya had trimmed this movie to the correct length, it would be have been a movie watching DOBARA!

Hi Vijay- We are in Bangalore and planning to see ‘Zindagi….’ this evening .So I wanted to see your review of the film .
I realised that you have not included a synopsis of the movie – I felt the need and thought would give you a feed back –
Your reviews are good – but you could also add some snaps from the movie and also comments or excerpts from others who had seen the movie –
All this could make your page more versatile-
    Best wishes – Ilango
