REVIEW: THE AVENGERS – 3D

THE AVENGERS (3D)
It is impossible not to have felt the hype surrounding the release of THE AVENGERS; and for the benefit of the chosen few who haven’t heard about this, THE AVENGERS is director Josh Whedon’s cinematic attempt at bringing a host of characters from Marvel Comics in the time tested battle of good versus evil. It is but natural not to expect too much of a story element in such a setting. Having been touted as a simple and straight forward action movie, the director wastes no footage on wanting to create dramatic scenes or to even create a thin veil of sentimentality. The overall feel of the movie is plastic and matches exactly with comic book textures. And in view of the source of the theme, there are no allusions, actual or imagined, to reality.
But these very features and the way they have been seamlessly built in the movie are the core reasons as to why this movie, and particularly in its 3-D version, will cause it to be a super hit. THE AVENGERS stars more than half a dozen lead actors and actresses: Samuel Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johannson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo and a few others; but no one gets to dominate the screen space, a simple rule to be followed when making multi-starrers. The other reason why this production appeals is the right dose of humour at the right places; not the type which will make you wild with guffaws, but the one-liner kind, which acts as a tension reliever as the relentless action gets unleashed on the screen. And lastly, the violence is not gory; it is comic book violence and in a few places like when The Hulk gets into action, it is more funny than cruel!
If you are a Marvel Comics fan, you will salivate at each scene; there will be an expression of Wow! every now and then. If you are not, you will feel that comic book characters like Superman or Batman had more appeal on the big screen!
