MTR: an institution

​A Sunday morning breakfast is something which is always worth looking forward to; and if it is in an institution like MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Rooms) in Bangalore, it becomes even more so. With just one outlet operating in Lal Bagh Road, MTR, set up in 1924 was in danger of becoming an anachronistic institution, but in the last couple of years, a number of outlets have sprung up in Bangalore, and overseas, MTR has sprung up in Dubai, Singapore and recently in Muscat. The ambience is very ordinary and is wholly unrepresentative of the delectable taste of the typical Karnataka vegetarian fare. Only pure ghee is used, their kitchens are spotlessly clean (MTR had pioneered the concept of walk through kitchens several decades back) and you can never have a similar tasting Dosa anywhere else. The Dosa, which is crisp and deep golden brown from the outside, is soft and light brown from the inside, because they use black lentils in the making if the dough. MTR has also been the founder of Rava Idli, although I am not sure as to whether they have registered a patent for that! Another trade mark item is Chow Chow bath, an odd serving of something like Upma together with the sweet Rava Kesari..this should be enough for someone to long for a visit to MTR!
